SERVICES FOR HOLY WEEK & EASTER 2022
Holy Week 2022
The vacancy at St Mary’s gives the church a chance to welcome guests to
preside and preach at the Communion Services over the Holy Week and
Easter Weekend. This will enable us to see through fresh eyes, both the
poignancy of Holy Week and the celebration of Easter.
Palm Sunday – 10th April
Holy Week begins. We start our journey towards Easter today by marking
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Golden Palm crosses will be given out during
the service. You may also like to bring along green or flowering shrub
branches to carry in the Parish Communion. This is a long tradition in
mainland Europe and is in effect our ‘local’ spring palms. Please leave
your flowering branches in the cross outside the church as a reminder to
visitors of this special day. The service will be led by Rev’d Chris Ivory
In the evening we celebrate Evening Prayer by Zoom link at 6.30 pm.
The Journey of Holy Week
Palm Sunday sees the start of Holy Week and the days that follow are the
most important in the Christian Year as we journey with Jesus through the
events of the final few days of his life. The Church has traditionally marked
the week with special services.
A few notes for the week ahead:
Daily prayer – Morning Prayer is held Monday-Wednesday at 9.30am
Monday – 11th April
Tuesday – 12th April
Wednesday – 13th April
Maundy Thursday – 14th April
The Holy Oils used in anointing the sick and at Baptism & Confirmation are
blessed today at a Eucharist at the Cathedral at 10.30am. At this service,
clergy also reaffirm their commitment to the vows taken at ordination.
There will be an evening Parish Communion of the Lord’s Supper at
7.30pm. Rev’d Professor Alasdair Coles will preside at this service at
which we remember the Last Supper. At the end of the service the altar is
stripped and coverings removed to remind us of the time that Jesus spent
in the garden on the night of his arrest. The Watch of quiet prayer will
follow ending with Compline at 9pm. This is also lead by Alasdair.
Good Friday – 15th April
The Easter Garden is created by the children at 10am. This is led by
Gillian Pett.
The Liturgy for Good Friday, including the reading of the St John Passion
and proclamation of the cross is held in church at 2pm. At this service a
number of different people will read the Good Friday narrative. Amanda
Tuck, an LLM from a neighbouring Deanery will lead the service.
Holy Saturday – 16th April
The Easter Vigil starts at 8pm. There will be a service of light, first
proclamation of Easter, renewal of Baptismal vows and a Eucharist. A
great opportunity to experience the joy of the first Easter service, as night
falls. Rev’d Canon John Pinder will preside and preach at this service.
Easter Day – 17th April
At St Mary’s we begin with a celebration of Holy Communion (BCP) at
8am; a traditional language service, with a short sermon. The 10am Parish
Communion is our main service for the day. The Rt Rev’d Dr Dagmar
Winter, Bishop of Huntingdon will preside and preach at both these
services.
The day concludes with Evening Worship on zoom at 6.30pm.
Do please come along and celebrate the most important day in the year.
